An Evening of Acoustic Roots Music with
John Reischman & The Jaybirds ( a former Wintergrass performer)
Cahalen Morrison & Eli West (Wintergrass 2012 performers)

Columbia City Theater
Show at 8pm, Tickets $15

LISTEN to the artists: http://www.hearthmusic.com/concerts.html
BUY Tickets: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/210833

Wow, this is going to be a great night of bluegrass and acoustic roots
music with two of our most favorite bands! Cahalen & Eli are fresh off a
series of tours in the UK and Europe and have some new music to share.
John Reischman & The Jaybirds are one of the finest bluegrass bands
around and are always a delight to catch live.

John Reischman & The Jaybirds
In a marketplace flooded with virtuosic bluegrass ensembles, John
Reischman & The Jaybirds have found a recipe to stand out from the rest:
they go back to the roots of bluegrass and old-time music for their
inspiration, then spin these roots into a new sound. On their new album,
Vintage & Unique, they cover songs and tunes from Bill Monroe, Hobart
Smith, and Hazel Dickens, but the real gems of the album are the
band’s originals. These songs and tunes are clearly informed by the
tradition, but John Reischman & The Jaybirds have an eclectic creativity
that guides their excursions in acoustic roots music.

Cahalen Morrison & Eli West
Starting from their mutual love of old-time and bluegrass singing,
Cahalen Morrison & Eli West have brought in a myriad of new ideas and
influences, like the wide, empty spaces of Cahalen’s home state of New
Mexico, or Eli’s crooked harmonies and unorthodox syncopations. But more
importantly, they get that the music needs space to breath, space to
think, space to belong. This is rare in the barn-burning speedster world
of today’s bluegrass picking parties, and it transforms their music into
something entirely new and refreshing.

There are 5 levels of parking below Bellevue Place, which is the complex where the Hyatt is located. There are over 1000 parking spots there. Those lots are connected directly to additional lots below Lincoln Place, right across the street. If you are staying at the hotel, you will have FREE PARKING. If you are attending Wintergrass and you park at any time during the day and leave after 8pm, parking is also FREE. The gate goes up at 8pm. If you leave BEFORE 8PM, there are parking charges, but there are a bunch of ways to get parking validation – at any number of restaurants or shops. In addition to all that parking, there is a huge amount of space available across the street at Bellevue Square. All of that parking is free but alittle bit of a walk but not that far. You can see where all of the parking lots are by taking a look at the complex map.

The Pacific NW bluegrass scene is known for its strong presence of great youth pickers. The Bluegrass Regulators not only have come out of the great youth programs run at the festivals like Wintergrass, Rivercity and some of the other great Pacific NW festivals but they have also been teaching at the youth programs in the area started by people like the late Chick Rose. Banjo player Luke Dewhirst at 17 is the youngest member (a Rockygrass Banjo Contest winner) also plays banjo for the band Runaway Train. Playing the banjo since 7 years old, he became sponsored by Ome Banjos and proudly plays his OME Gold Phoenix to this day. In 2004, Luke and his sister Kaiti attended the first Wintergrass Youth Academy run by Chick Rose. During the festival, Luke, along with his siblings and cousin Steven, made their debut performance as the family band Dewgrass. He continued to attend the Wintergrass Youth Academy until 2011.

Molly Adkins (18) is the newest member of the Bluegrass Regulators. Being the daughter of guitarist Dale Adkins, Molly has been a familiar face in the Northwest bluegrass scene most of her life. Her debut album entitled Down in the Valley was released in 2004 as a benefit project to raise money for her friend and mentor Carol Harley (of the band Misty River) for her Leukemia treatment fund. Molly began performing as a duo with bandmate Martin Stevens in 2007 and

Martin Stevens, 23, has been a part of the Northwest Bluegrass and Contest Fiddle community since age six. Growing up contest fiddling, he won the Washington State Fiddle Contest multiple times in different categories. Martin was a part of the band Athena and the Rivercity Boys for 5 years. Aside from his playing with the Regulators he is also the mandolinist and fiddle player with Dan Crary and Thunderation.

Bassist Josh Adkins (20) was introduced to acoustic music at an early age by his father, bluegrass guitarist Dale Adkins . Josh picked up the mandolin at age ten and then the guitar at thirteen, playing along with his father and grandfather. In his late teens he began playing the upright bass.
In a concerted effort to broaden his musical horizons, Josh was influenced by several artists whose impact is evident in his musicianship today, including Eric Clapton, Queen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Tommy Emmanuel, and the Rosenberg Trio.

The Regulators still get to have Luke’s brother Jake appear at select shows when he can get away from his studies at West Point. Jake is well known in the northwest for his powerful rhythm and smooth, tasteful lead playing. Jake has literally been playing guitar since he could walk, encouraged by his father, Gary Dewhirst.
In 2000, Jake started attending the annual Wintergrass Music Festival with his dad and his brother Luke. Over the next few years, he was fortunate enough to spend one-on-one instructional time with guitar masters Kenny Smith, Chris Eldridge, Tim Stafford, and Andy Falco through the Wintergrass Music Academy, quickly growing into a force to be reckoned with in the northwest music scene. In the summer of 2008, 16-year-old Jake started work on his debut CD under the mentorship of Dale Adkins. “Shades of Grey” released in February 2009, quickly gained local and national acclaim. In July 2009, Jake won the Colorado State Flatpicking Championship in Lyons, CO, becoming the youngest winner in the contests 35+ year history.

The Anderson Family of Grass Valley, a northern California town steeped in gold rush history. The Andersons first attended the California Bluegrass Association Festival at Grass Valley in 2001, when Daisy was just 8½ weeks old.

At the CBA festival in 2003, Paige and Aimee were inspired by a performance of “Kids on Bluegrass”, the CBA’s popular program for very young pickers. Shortly after that festival, Paige started taking guitar(Paige plays a 2011 Schenk Custom RD Nashville Flattpicker guitar,Schenk Guitars are a Wintergrass Sponsor) by lessons so she could play along with Mark(the Dad) , a fledgling banjo picker. Aimee picked up the fiddle a couple of months after that, starting out on a quarter-size instrument and also taking lessons.

By the 2004 festival, Paige and Aimee were participants in “KOB”, gaining valuable musical and on-stage experience and performing the two tunes the sisters had spent months working out, “Cripple Creek” and “Old Joe Clark”. As Paige recalls their debut, “When our turn came, we walked out on the stage and played our first song and got a huge response. Aimee and I looked at each other with really big smiles on our faces”. It’s fair to say the band was born at that moment. Christy started playing the upright bass, after a false start on the dobro. Ethan picked up the mandolin, enthralled by the picking of Bill Monroe. Daisy started out fiddling on the quarter-size fiddle Aimee had outgrown, displaying an unerring sense of rhythm at a very young age. The family started playing in public early in 2005 and it’s been full speed ahead since then.

In June 2008, the Anderson Family won the Best Bluegrass Band award at the Northern California Artistic Achievement Awards (“The Grassies”) in Nevada City, California.
