Wintergrass 2012 Performers-Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder

Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder will be at Wintergrass 2012 on Friday only. Ricky Skaggs has been a professional performer while still in his teens. Ricky played as a duet with the late Keith Whitley playing Stanley Brothers style bluegrass. In 1971 Ricky & Keith both joined Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys and from then on it was one great band after another. Fiddle and mandolin with J.D. Crowe and the New South,Boone Creek,The Whites, Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band and eventually Ricky formed his own award winning country band. Ricky played country music for quite awhile before forming Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder in 1997. Ricky and the band have been nominated for 12 Grammys and have won 8.

Ricky’s band Kentucky Thunder is comprised of some of the best singers and pickers in bluegrass.

Paul Brewster on guitar and vocals was a member of the Knoxville Grass and spent 10 years with the Osborne Brothers and brief stints with the Pinnacle Boys and Dollywood bluegrass band, True Blue, he was asked to become a member of Kentucky Thunder. In addition to lending his unmistakable tenor to countless Ricky Skaggs albums, Brewster is also an accomplished songwriter and solo artist. In 2001, he teamed up with band-mate Mark Fain to co-produce Everybody’s Talkin’, his first solo project for Skaggs Family Records.

Andy Leftwich on fiddle is a former Tennessee State Fiddle Championship. Andy has performed at Wintergrass with his side project Three Ring Circle with Rob Ickes of Blue Highway and bassist Dave Pomeroy. Andy’s fiddle and mandolin are always in demand as a Nashville session player.

Cody Kilby on guitar ,picked up his dad’s banjo at age 8 and had a Gibson Banjo endorsement by the time he was 11. He started playing his mom’s guitar at 10, and by 17, he was the National Flatpicking Champion. He added mandolin and dobro at around age 13, and at 16, recorded Just Me, showing his mastery of each instrument on the recording.

Eddie Faris turned a childhood dream into reality by accepting Ricky’s invitation to join Kentucky Thunder in 2009. At the age of 9 years old, while attending a Ricky Skaggs concert, he pointed to former band member guitarist Darrin Vincent and said he wanted his job. Eddie grew up in Kansas, and was a member in his family’s band, the Faris Family Bluegrass Band, for 12 years. As a member of Kentucky Thunder, he is a baritone vocalist and plays the guitar.

Justin Moses on banjo, a founding member of the band Sierra Hull & Highway 111, In 2006, Justin’s solo instrumental album, Dusty Roads, was released to many favorable reviews. Making his Grand Ole Opry debut in 2008, he has become an in-demand session player, appearing on 2009′s IBMA Album of the Year and Grammy-nominated album, Wheels. Justin has spent time with bands Blue Moon Rising, NewFound Road, the Dan Tyminski Band, and now has found a new home with Kentucky Thunder.

will be back at Wintergrass 2012 performing this time as a trio with Bryan Sutton (guitar) & Mike Bub (bass). Tim was singer,mandolinst and fiddle player with Hot Rize for 12 years before establishing himself as a solo artist. Tim’s bio is way to long for a blog post so it is best if you are not familiar with Tim to check out his website. If you know Tim’s music you know it will be another stellar performance at Wintergrass.

Wintergrass 2012 Workshop Schedule!

A major part of Wintergrass is the workshops that are included in your admission to the festival. Even if you do not play any instruments it is great to learn about the music. This years workshops include:songwriting,various instruments,festival yoga,harmony singing, the International Bluegrass Music Museum’s Bill Monroe Centennial Travelling Exhibit, a film on Pete Seeger, square dance calling and of course, much,much more. This is the schedule as of today but as with any live event unforeseen circumstances may make changes necessary.

Wintergrass 2012 is focusing on the international reach of bluegrass and Italian bluegrass band Red Wine is one of the oldest bluegrass bands in Europe, actively touring since 1978, with a style that embraces traditional and contemporary bluegrass, country, gospel, and a little swing. Red Wine has played all over Europe, appearing at some of the major international festivals and venues in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, Holland, Czech Republic and Austria, sharing the stage with major acts from the USA and Europe and gaining a strong following everywhere.

Mandolin and lead singer Martino Coppo has played and recorded with Tony Trischka & Barbara Lamb, Gene Parsons, Carlo Aonzo, Freewheelin’, Arizona, Francesco Guccini, Roberto Dalla Vecchia, Vittorio De Scalzi, La Rosa Tatuata, and performs frequently with Beppe Gambetta (one of Red Wine’s founding members along with Silvio), the Kathy Chiavola Band, and Paolo Bonfanti. He also keeps a busy teaching shedule on bluegrass/folk mandolin, giving workshops and private lessons.
Red Wine founding member Silvio Ferretti (banjo, guitar, dobro, harmony vocals) also played with Freewheelin’ for a few years. He’s contributed to music mags in Italy and the USA for about 25 years, and in the past 10 years has cultivated one of his lifelong passions working as a luthier. He also works as a consultant for Saga Musical Instruments, and plays with the Saga bluegrass band at the major music trade shows around the world. Harmony singer and guitar player, Luca Bartolini, did an initial stint with Red Wine in the early ’90s, taking the place left vacant by Beppe Gambetta, then moved on to play New Country with a well known band called Hocus Pocus before joining Red Wine again in 2002.
Harmony singer and bass player, Lucas Bellotti has just joined the band.

Scholarship Opportunity for 1-Day Workshop on Innovative Ways to Motivate Students and Increase Learning and 4-Day Pass to Award-Winning Wintergrass Music Festival

The Sallal Grange in North Bend, Washington is awarding a scholarship to a Snoqualmie Valley resident (Carnation, Fall City, Preston, Snoqualmie, North Bend or Snoqualmie Pass) or educator teaching in Snoqualmie Valley to a highly acclaimed one-day workshop to be held Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Wintergrass Music Festival ( www.wintergrass.com ) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Bellevue, Washington PLUS a 4-day pass for the award-winning Wintergrass Music Festival.

“This is the best workshop that I have ever attended in my 20+ years as a teacher!,” commented Dana Nohavec, teacher at Snoqualmie Elementary School in Snoqualmie, Washington, last year’s scholarship recipient.

According to Snoqualmie resident and Workshop Director, Trisha Tubbs, “This is very exciting!!! I can’t thank the Sallal Grange enough for its generosity! What a terrific opportunity for a Valley resident!”

Asked about the workshop, Tubbs replied “We’ve brought in some leading experts from around the country to create an innovative, interactive and interesting workshop. Teachers attending the workshop in past years raved about what an excellent workshop it was and what a great time they had.”

The Workshop (“Innovative Ways to Motivate Students and Increase Learning: Harnessing the Power of American Roots Music and Dance!!!” ) is approved for 8 clock hours of continuing education for Washington State teachers . It features acclaimed professor Dr. Tom Kopp from the School of Education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio; Nancy Cardwell, former teacher and Special Projects Director for the International Bluegrass Music Association in Nashville, Tennessee; Dr. Renata Bratt, PhD., one of the leading eclectic styles educators (and musician) in the country; Beth Fortune, Wintergrass Education Director, Washington Middle School Orchestra and Choir director, and Chair of the American String Teacher Association’s Eclectic Styles committee; and other highly rated educators.

This interactive, “hands-on” workshop will provide educational information on American roots music, share teaching and motivation approaches using music and dance, and provide lesson plans and resources for utilizing bluegrass/Americana music in the classroom. The workshop will provide strategies to increase student motivation to learn, promote cultural awareness, increase music appreciation and engage students with different learning abilities and diverse backgrounds.

Applicants must either live or teach in the Snoqualmie Valley. The Sallal Grange & Community Hall recently celebrated eighty years of being a local resource and cornerstone for community fellowship and service. The Grange does various activities to benefit the community and local non-profit organizations such as the Mt. Si Helping Hands Food Bank in North Bend, the Mt. Si Community Center, the Linus Project and student/teacher music education, growth and learning. The Grange also hosts public events including a well-regarded open mic the first Friday of every month with a communal potluck beforehand, a family board game night from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm the last Wednesday of every month, concerts throughout the year and lectures/presentations of various topics. In a marketplace flooded with virtuosic bluegrass ensembles, John
Reischman & The Jaybirds have found a recipe to stand out from the rest:

Hot Buttered Rum is the perfect band for a Wintergrass dance.Friday and Saturday nights will be have a return of Hot Buttered Rum playing dance sets!! Initially formed as an acoustic string band, seven years of constant touring has transformed Hot Buttered Rum into a plugged-in, percussive powerhouse that wows critics and fans alike. Their left-coast rock reveals an access to jazz, country, and world music that few groups can match. While the band’s music belies simple categorization, its songwriting and stage chemistry delights listeners at every turn. This is a band who have a diverse background in music before exploring the bluegrass world. They do a lot of original tunes utilizing their classical,jazz,rock,Grateful Dead & bluegrass roots. Hot Buttered Rum sets often include Bill Monroe classics,fiddle tunes, originals, Grateful Dead songs, The Band and whatever the band is inspired to play at the moment. This quintet plays an amazing variety of instruments including banjo, guitar, Dobro™, ukulele, flute, whistle, clarinet, saxophone, accordion, piano, harmonica,mandolins,violin,bass,guitar. The band’s music has been described as High Altitude Bluegrass. The band is also well known for their involvement by their participating actively in being Green. Wintergrass 2012 Parking Information

There are 5 levels of parking below Bellevue Place, which is the complex where the Hyatt is located. There are over 1000 parking spots there. Those lots are connected directly to additional lots below Lincoln Place, right across the street. If you are staying at the hotel, you will have FREE PARKING. If you are attending Wintergrass and you park at any time during the day and leave after 8pm, parking is also FREE. The gate goes up at 8pm. If you leave BEFORE 8PM, there are parking charges, but there are a bunch of ways to get parking validation – at any number of restaurants or shops. In addition to all that parking, there is a huge amount of space available across the street at Bellevue Square. All of that parking is free but alittle bit of a walk but not that far. You can see where all of the parking lots are by taking a look at the complex map.
