New! Wintergrass Intensives – Thursday, February 24, 2011
Wintergrass is pleased to announce our new adult education program. Wintergrass Intensives are designed for the experienced musician who wants to deepen their knowledge and hone their skills under the tutelage of the finest working musicians. This year we’ll offer a full day program for singers and 3 half day programs for intermediate to advanced players of guitar, mandolin and banjo.
Vocal Harmony with Laurie Lewis, Dale Ann Bradley and Tom Rozum
The human voice is the oldest musical instrument, and almost all of us have one, of some sort or another. One of the most fun/fulfilling/exciting things you can do is to use that voice to harmonize with others. In this intensive workshop, we will spend the day learning and applying the basics, and working on the refining the nuances of bluegrass harmony singing.
The day will start right off with an overview of harmonies, with examples and “voice-on” learning of parts, both in a large bluegrass choir and in intimate duets and trios, where you will have the opportunity to work with the individual instructors.
In the afternoon, each instructor will be teaching a mini-class on such topics as phrasing and nuance, style, finding the right key for your voice and your song, and arranging tips. This will be followed by more learning of specific harmony parts and singing, singing, singing!
Bring comfortable clothes, a recording device if you like, and you water bottle.
Guitar Intensive with Josh Williams
Study intermediate guitar with six-time SPBGMA Guitar Player of the Year and 2008, 2009 IBMA Guitar Player of the Year Josh Williams. Josh toured Special Consensus, went on to work with Rhonda Vincent and the Rage from 2003-2007, currently plays with the Tony Rice Unit and now fronts his own Josh Williams Band.
Mandolin Intensive with Adam Steffey

Steffey has a long, illustrious career as an in-demand band member, playing with Lonesome River Band, Allison Kraus & Union Station, Mountain Heart, The Dan Tyminski Band and most recently The Boxcars.
Banjo Intensive with Ron Stewart
Multi-instrumental threat Ron Stewart is one of the most sought after session players in the genre’s history, and is in high demand as an engineer and producer. In his thirty-three years of playing banjo, fiddle, guitar, bass, and mandolin, Ron has performed with a who’s who of bluegrass, including Lynn Morris, Curly Seckler, JD Crowe and The New South, followed by a stint as a member of the Dan Tyminski Band and most recently with The Boxcars.
